ABOUT JIMMY
My campaign is about tackling the challenges facing our district head-on with innovative, practical solutions. I bring over 30 years of professional experience with United Airlines, where I developed skills in customer service, teamwork, and crisis management, skills that directly translate to the collaborative, high-pressure environment of the School Board.
Just as important is my perspective as a father of four children who have grown up in Sarasota’s public schools. My wife, Mydahlia, is a former district teacher, and together we’ve seen firsthand what’s working in our schools, and where change is needed.
Community Leadership
Over the past decade in Sarasota, I’ve committed myself to service. I currently serve as President of the Board for Star Lab, a pioneering K-3 school, and Vice Chair of the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Environmental Protection Advisory Board. I’m also a board member for the Friends of the Betty J. Johnson North Sarasota Library and an active volunteer with the Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition. Through mentorship with Unidos Now and CareerSpring, I’ve supported many first-generation college-bound students in finding their path to success.
Why I’m Running
Like many parents, I grew concerned as I watched our School Board focus more on politics than on students. I didn’t vote for book bans or culture wars, and I realized my family’s values weren’t being represented. I’m running to bring a student-centered approach back to the board.
Vision
My vision is to make Sarasota the #1 school district in Florida by:
• Championing early literacy
• Expanding career readiness with apprenticeships
• Prioritizing mental health and school safety
• Supporting our teachers with competitive pay and respect for their expertise
I’m not a career politician, I’m a father, a mentor, and a public servant who believes in respectful dialogue and practical solutions. With firsthand experience and decades of service to this community, I’m ready to be the voice District 1 deserves. It’s time for leadership that listens, schools that prepare every student for success, and a School Board that reflects the values of all of Sarasota.
